Be Prepared: Adventure Girl Gets Behind the Wheel

Our ultimate adventure traveler goes off-road. Read her column at AA.com/Women.

When planning an adventure, it’s easy to focus on what you’re going to do and forget to focus on all the little pieces that are pertinent to having a successful excursion. Recently, while thinking back on trips from days past, I realized it was time to approach these life experiences with a plan, to be more prepared for whatever comes my way. The first step? Learning how to handle the off-road.
Back on Board

Our ultimate adventure traveler tries snowboarding after hanging up her ski boots for 8 years. Read her column at AA.com/Women.

Here's the thing with trying lots of hobbies and sports but rarely returning to the same one over and over: You never get comfortable with any of them. From college through my 20s, I skied, pretty much, once a year. I loved it when I went, but my skill level stayed stagnant at a novice level. At 29, I reluctantly hung up my rental boots.
Adventure Girl-Dining Solo

Our ultimate adventure traveler prefers to choose food for its flavor rather than its novelty. Read her column at AA.com/Women.

While it's clear that eating odd bits of this and that makes for popular entertainment for lots of folks — look no further than the Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern for proof — I, for one, have never been a big fan of the gross-out school of adventure eating.
Adventure Girl-Takes Off

Our ultimate adventure traveler details how she took off in an ultralight after a delay. Read the story at AA.com/Women.

Give me the time I'm supposed to show up to do whatever it is I'm doing, and my adrenaline carries me through. I've waited the time I expected to wait between, “Yeah, I'm up for it” and “Saddle up, we're ready to ride.” Delays (no matter how long) open the door for me to question my sanity, especially when it comes to things like seatbelting myself into an ultralight (think dune buggy with wings) or being strapped to a hang glider for a tow up to — and sail down from — 4,400 feet.

Adventure Girl - Nudged into Action

Our ultimate adventure traveler details how she was nudged into action - and found she loved it. Read the story at AA.com/Women.

It seems doubtful that famous adventurers like journalist Nellie Bly, who, in 1889, one-upped the fictional hero of Around the World in Eighty Days by making the trip in 72 days, or pilot Amelia Earhart were ever bookworm-ish wallflowers. While I have no desire to be proved wrong today, I sense that biographies on Bly and Earhart probably don't start with "She was a shy child".
